| Leerresultaten | The Master of Arts in EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies provides its graduates with in-depth knowledge of the European Union as an actor in the international environment as well as skills in international negotiations and diplomacy. The demanding and intensive one-year study programme thus aims at a broad comprehension of the EU's external relations, bringing together an interdisciplinary analysis of its internal decision-making processes with developments in the wider context of international relations. Students learn to understand the functioning of the complex EU system and the multi-faceted international role of the European Union, and they acquire the sound theoretical and practical knowledge needed to succeed in a variety of careers in national, European and international affairs. Participants primarily come from an academic background in political science, European studies, International Relations, diplomatic studies, law, economics and history or are seconded from international organisations and national foreign services. The student body is highly diverse, comprising more than thirty different nationalities. The Department's professors are internationally known experts, representing a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds, countries and approaches. They include academics from renowned universities and think tanks as well as practitioners with many years of experience working for or with the EU or other international institutions. All courses are supported by academic assistants who ensure a smooth organisation, offer tutorials and help students with supplementary academic and practical advice. During the first semester, students follow several compulsory courses on EU and international affairs as well as an obligatory language course - either French, or, if a sufficient level of French has already been acquired, another language at beginners' level. In the second semester, participants choose four optional courses, which explore selected EU external affairs issues from the areas of security and justice, foreign economic relations, bi- and multilateral diplomacy or professional skills in greater detail. Students also spend two weeks at the Natolin (Warsaw) campus, where they participate in an interactive simulation game dealing with the EU's institutional response to an external security crisis and a course on the European Neighbourhood Policy. In addition, students are required to write a Master's thesis on a topic relevant to the study programme and based on their individual research. The thesis is written in the framework of one of the department's courses. Beyond the regular academic programme, the Department offers students a wide range of extra-curricular events such as high-level guest lectures, compact seminars, workshops and international conferences. The Department also conducts its own research activities. |
